Accepting Visa

In today's world of convenience, if you aren't accepting credit cards as a form of payment for your business, you are probably losing money to your competitors. According to the Nielson Repost of 2006, Visa held 44% of the credit card market share and 45% of the debit card market share in the United States, making them the single most popular for of card payment. Merchants usually sign up to accept Visa credit cards, along with the also popular MasterCard, even if they do not choose to accept any other form of card payment.

Like all credit card companies, Visa charges the merchant fees for doing business. The fees are often based on a percentage of the total transaction amount, but may also include a small per transaction rate. The rates vary depending on your merchant account provider and the total amount of sales your company generates. However, Visa's fees have traditionally been fairly competitive when compared to those of other credit card companies. Additional fees you may be charged from Visa or other credit card companies include authorization fees, statement fees, monthly minimum fees, and batch fees. This is an area where it really pays to shop around for the merchant account that offers the best deals.

Almost all merchants accept Visa anywhere you go these days. For the most part, there are few drawbacks that come with this form of payment. However, many merchants are able to run Visa debit cards just as they would a credit card, which may create complications if a sale is to be canceled. Although debit cards are directly linked to the consumers checking account, the Visa company doesn't permit cash back to be given on a debit card that is ran as a credit card. Often a hold is placed on checking account funds that might tie up the consumer's cash for days. Therefore, a business owner who accepts Visa should communicate with their merchant account to be aware of these limitations and know exactly how to handle certain processing issues. However, for the most part, Visa is a reputable company that provides convenience for both card holders and business owners alike.
